Narrative Structure: Todorov's theory

Tzvetan Todorov's narrative theory suggests that most films follow a five step structure where the beginning is an equilibrium, where everything is balanced.
The five stages are:

  1. EQUILIBRIUM - This is when the film begins and everything seems to be normal
  2. DISTRIBUTION OF EQUILIBRIUM - This is when the balance and normality is disrupted by a certain event
  3. DIS-EQUALIBRIUM - When the characters have a realisation of the disruption
  4. ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR DISRUPTION - When characters attempt to repair and restore the issue
  5. REINSTATEMENT OF DISRUPTION - When the problem has been defeated and restored back to the new equilibrium
